CJ picks up his 11th win of the season via a Kyle Larson victory last Sunday in Watkins Glen. He also had third place finisher Martin Truex Jr., seventh place Christopher Bell and eighth place Kevin Harvick to net him a weekly high 205 points last week.
Eric was P2 with 145 points scored via a runner-up from Chase Elliott, fifth by Denny Hamlin and sixth with William Byron.
Greg was the low man last week scoring only 85 points with just Kyle Busch getting a top 10 from his team. CJ now leads Eric by 215 points head to Indianapolis for a race that should look pretty much the same as the others we’ve seen on road courses lately.
I don’t see why it would really be any different since this is an inaugural race on the track here.
Hendrick Motorsports has now won 8 of the last 9 overall road course races in general including Larson and Elliott going 1-2 in three of the five this season alone. Counting Joe Gibbs Racing, them and HMS have combined to win each of the last 10 road course races.
Throw in Furniture Row Racing (Martin Truex Jr.) who was aligned with JGR, these three teams have won 13 of the last 14 road course races. The only one they didn’t win was when Ryan Blaney (Team Penske) was victorious in 2018 on the Charlotte ROVAL when Truex was crashed in the final turn on the final lap or else it would be 14 straight.
They swept the entire top seven of the finishing order last weekend at that.
Stewart-Haas Racing is the only other team to have won since 2015 on road courses. Hendrick has won 9 times, JGR has won 4 times, Furniture Row, SHR and Penske each twice themselves. That’s 19 races.
Expect Sunday to be another Larson/Elliott show with Truex, Hamlin, Bell and Busch mixing it up behind.
Elliott has also won six of the last nine road course races and was runner-up in two of the three that he didn’t win. He’s also won the last three inaugural road course races at that too.
Larson, has won two of the last four road course races on the season and was runner-up in COTA and had a top three in Road America before accidentally getting pushed off track by his teammate. CJ has Truex Jr. who’s been a top 10 threat in every road course race run this year to go along with Bell who won at Daytona, was runner-up in Road America and had a top three car before being spun by Larson late in Watkins Glen.
Denny Hamlin has had four top eight results in five road course starts in 2021. Eric has both Elliott and Hamlin. He also has Joey Logano who has three top four finishes in five road course races this season too. These are Eric’s top three drivers on Sunday and three of the top five best on these tracks in 2021 too.
