Santino Ferrucci enters this weekends NTT INDYCAR Series action at the World Wide Technology Raceway on the heels of a fourth place finish in last Sunday’s Indianapolis 500. The momentum is there. He senses it. He feels it.
“We’re coming off the Indy 500 with huge momentum heading into the Bommarito Automotive Group doubleheader,” said the sophomore driver. “I’m super confident we can build on that momentum, and I can’t wait to get back to racing for SealMaster, Bommarito and all of our sponsors.”
Ferrucci has shot up to eighth in the championship standings at the midway mark of the season. He has four top 10 finishes in his last six starts in the season in his No. 18 Honda.
Now, we’re at Gateway for not one, but two shots at a win. I think it could happen too.
First off, Gateway hasn’t been a strong track for the heavy hitters. Josef Newgarden won in 2017 but was seventh the last two years. Simon Pagenaud has three top fives but winless. Will Power won in 2018 but 20th (2017) and 22nd (2019) in his other two starts. Scott Dixon is 0-for-4. Alexander Rossi has one too five in three tries. Ryan Hunter-Reay has no top fives in three tries. Colton Herta was ninth a year ago in his rookie start. Graham Rahal has no top 10s himself.
See where the door is open?
Ferrucci led 93 laps in this race last year and finished fourth. That’s why he’s overly confident.
“We felt like we had the race won last year, leading almost 100 laps,” Ferrucci continued. “So, I’ve been waiting to get back there ever since. I think we have a really good chance at getting a win, especially with the doubleheader format.”
