Chandler Smith Dominates Friday Nights ARCA Race at Lucas Oil Raceway

7.2 miles. That’s the distance between the Indianapolis Motor Speedway on the west side of Indianapolis and the Lucas Oil Raceway on the east side of Hendricks County. One track has host fans this weekend, one can’t. That in part due to geography.

On Friday night, LOR played host to the ARCA Menards Racing Series. The stands were half filled with spectators as the crowd was treated to a thrilling Calypso Lemonade 200.

Chandler Smith bested Sam Mayer by just .899 seconds in a late race thrilling battle. Smith, 18, may have started on the pole and led 162 of 200 laps, but the closing laps of Friday night’s race left nothing more to be desired.

Smith, 18, took over the lead on Lap 39 and never looked back en route to his ninth ARCA win in his just 23rd career start.

But, Mayer made it a race in the end. His No. 21 Chevrolet caught Smiths No. 20 Toyota with 10 laps left and the battle was on.

Smith, just had too much power as he went on to win on the .686-mile short track for the second straight start.

Last Fall, he led just the final seven laps before rains hit. This time, it was never in doubt as he’s now 2-for-2 in Sioux Chief Showdown races in 2020.

Mayer, was second while Hallie Deegan finished third in her No. 4 Ford.

15 year old Taylor Gray brought out the inky caution for an on track incident when he spun near the Lap 140 stage break while battling for second in Turn 2. He’d still rebound to finish fourth in his No. 17 Ford.

Thad Moffitt rounded out the top five.

Championship points leader Michael Self finished seventh. He had to pit late in the race for a flat tire after giving up third to Deegan, and lost two laps. Howie DiSavino III and Kyle Sieg rounded out the top 10.

Self maintained his points lead of 12 over Hailie Deegan. Drew Dollar, who experienced mechanical issues at the second break and finished 14th, dropped to third – 19 behind Self.

The Calypso 200 aired live on MAVTV and TrackPass on NBC Gold.

The ARCA Menards Series will next race in the General Tire 150 at Kentucky Speedway on Saturday, July 11. That race is rescheduled from the May event, originally at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
