Lap 118 Big One Takes Out Front Runners, Most Of The Playoff Bubble Drivers Too

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – The intensity was ramping up in Sunday’s rain delayed Coke Zero Sugar 400. There were just over 100 miles to go and rain was in the area. It was go time.

Unfortunately, go time also means wrecking time.

Austin Dillon needed a win. He won the second stage and was leading the race with 42 laps remaining. But, the low line was getting some energy and making a run on him. Dillon, came down to block Clint Bowyer but Bowyer didn’t want to lift. He also needs a win to secure himself into the postseason.

Dillon, admitted he blocked because he wants to win. Bowyer, mad at Dillon for blocking, doesn’t blame him either.

So, one car blocking and another not lifting. As a result, you get a 17 car melee in Turn 1 which because it started up front, took out nearly half the field. Among those drivers were Chase Elliott, Alex Bowman, all four Joe Gibbs Racing cars, Kyle Larson and more. But, if you dig deeper, most of the cars that are on the playoff bubble were all wadded up in that incident.

Heading into this weekend, 10th place in the standings was Ryan Blaney. He was involved in that crash in his No. 12 Ford. Blaney’s streak of three straight top 10 finishes on the season comes to a close. His last three Daytona finishes are 40th, 31st and 36th respectively.

13th in the standings was Kyle Larson. He was involved but luckily kept going.

15th in the standings is Daniel Suarez. He crashed out on Lap 84 and finished last in 40th.

16th in the standings was Bowyer. He finishes 34th.

17th in the standings was Erik Jones. He crashed but like Larson was able to continue.

19th in the standings is Ricky Stenhouse Jr. He crashed on Lap 60 but was able to avoid any damage. The second crash, he wasn’t so lucky. While he continued on, he had some major damage.

21st in the standings is Dillon. He’s credited with 33rd place result.

That’s a lot of bubble cars that leave with wrecked race cars.
