DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – Brad Keselowski made a bold statement during Thursday’s Happy Hour session at the Daytona International Speedway. Keselowski, was sick of being crashed on superspeedway races.
His last seven points paying superspeedway races saw him finish – 32nd, 33rd, 36th, 27th, 12th and 13th respectively. One of those was a 36th place result in last year’s Coke Zero Sugar 400. See, he crashed out early when he had to lift to avoid William Byron who Keselowski viewed was blocking on the Daytona Superstretch.
Since Keselowski lifted, those behind him didn’t and he got ran over from behind. Following that crash, Keselowski said that he wouldn’t do so anymore. He’d just wreck the cars who block him in front.
During Thursday’s final practice, Byron came down a bit and Keselowski punted his left rear quarter panel in Turn 3. At the time, Keselowski said he was sending a message. He was sick of crashing and wanted to let everyone know that enough was enough.
But, on Lap 84 in Sunday’s rain delayed Coke Zero Sugar 400, Keselowski was hit from behind which caused him to get into the outside SAFER barrier in the tri-oval. That resulted in a 39th place finish for his third straight result of 30th or worse in the July race in Daytona.
“I know I was going straight one moment and the next moment I wasn’t,” said Keselowski on the crash. “It’s unfortunate. We were all two and three-wide racing and just got tagged from the back. I’m not sure exactly. I know we got to three-wide at the top of three and it looks like Kevin (Harvick) gave me a real straight push. I don’t know. It just took off on me.”
In fact, just look at his finishes at Daytona since his win here in 2016 – 27th, 31st, 32nd, 36th, 12th and now 39th.
For someone with six superspeedway wins, Daytona just isn’t his strong suit. He has five of those six wins at Talladega.
