AVONDALE, AZ — Ryan Blaney’s 2022 season ends winless. The Team Penske driver picked up an All-Star race victory back in May but that’s not counted in the history books in the win column. He wound up the first loser in Sunday’s Season Finale 500 at Phoenix in having a front row seat to his teammate Joey Logano win the NASCAR Cup Series season finale and second career championship.
While he was happy a teammate won and solidified a championship in the process, he was equally as frustrated to not have won himself.
“I wish we could have won one,” Blaney said. “We had a great car to do it, and it just didn’t happen. I’m proud of the effort. We had a winning car, and it just didn’t happen. You can’t pass anybody. You get behind someone and get tight and it takes your air away, and that’s all you can do.”
If Blaney would have won and Logano was second, it still would have been a championship winning season for Logano which is why Blaney fought until the end for the victory.
He led three times for 109 laps and had a car capable of the win but ultimately came up just short in crossing the finish line .301-seconds behind. Blaney was second in Stage 1 and won Stage 2 and had the lead until the final round of pit stops to where Chase Briscoe beat him off pit lane.
His winless streak stretches 46 races now as his 2022 season ended in the Round of 8. He did have four top four finishes over the final seven weeks.
