Capps wins Funny Car Callout on Sunday at IRP

CLERMONT, Ind — A purse of $130k was on the line on Sunday with $80k of it going to the winner of the Funny Car Callout event during the prestigious Dodge Power Brokers US Nationals.

Ron Capps beat Matt Hagan on a hole shot to score the all-star race crown. While he’s 0-for-25 in the US Nationals, he’s now won twice here in events not of the Big Go.

The road to the finals was as spicy as it can get with plenty of storylines surrounding the first round matchups. Points leader Robert Hight had the first choice among the 8 drivers and he elected to go with the hottest driver in the field in Bob Tasca III. He called his shot in saying on Friday night, “bring it on” in terms of Tasca.

Tasca has 3 wins in the last 4 races on the season including 2 straight. Hight called him out. The other matchups were Alexis DeJoria vs. Hagan, Cruz Pedregon vs. John Force and a rematch of last year’s US Nationals finals in Capps vs. Tim Wilkerson.

Hight topped Tasca III with Hagan, Force and Capps each victorious as well.

In the semis, Capps had the top pick due to his low ET in the opening round and he called out Force. That set up another matchup of Hight vs. Hagan.

Capps bested Force and Hagan with the upset over Hight shaping the final round matchup between Capps vs. Hagan.
