CLERMONT, Ind — Steve Torrence continues his blazing hot streak as the 4-time defending Top Fuel champion took home some early hardware on a cloudy Saturday afternoon at the Lucas Oil Raceway Park. In a rematch of last year’s Top Fuel final round for the 67th annual Big Go, Torrence blitzed Force 3.682 ET to 3.704 ET to score the $80k Callout triumph.
This was his 2nd all-star race victory here at IRP as his other came in the 2017 Traxxas Shootout.
Torrence went winless in the first 14 races to the season but won the last points paying event prior to the US Nationals two weeks ago in Brainerd. He then qualified P2 provisionally on Friday night before doing so again on Saturday afternoon.
In terms of the Callout, no one was better.

Torrence beat Leah Pruett in Round 1 of the Callouts back in March at Gainesville before defeating Justin Ashley in the semifinal matchup here on Saturday afternoon. Force beat Antron Brown in her opening round matchup in Florida and by having the low ET that day, she got the first pick for the semis. On Friday night, she got to make her decision and she chose Mike Salinas as her opponent in the Final Four.
Force beat Salinas easily as he had a mechanical problem on his run. That setup a rematch with Torrence in the final round.
While Force didn’t have enough to beat him, her ET luckily moved her from the outside looking in entering the round to 4th in qualifying to easily stamp her name into Monday’s final eliminations.
It was bittersweet for her but bigger picture suggests the run could have a more lasting impact the rest of the weekend.
