MADISON, Ill — Not long after a special session among 9 drivers took place to help aid in a 2nd lane groove at the World Wide Technology Raceway, the full field of 26 took to the 1.25-mile World Wide Technology Raceway for final practice in preparation for Saturday’s Bommarito Automotive Group 500 (6 p.m. ET, USA, INDYCAR Radio Network).
The session was stopped just short of the 60 minute duration when Jimmie Johnson brought out the lone stoppage of the practice when he spun his No. 48 Dallara-Honda on pit road. Just prior to that, Graham Rahal jumped to the top of the speed charts in his No. 15 Dallara-Honda with a top speed of 177.728 mph.
He narrowly beat Scott Dixon (177.459 mph) as the Honda duo were the only ones to eclipse the 177 mph barrier.
David Malukas was P3 in his No. 18 Honda with a lap of 176.724 mph while Romain Grosjean (176.546 mph) and Alex Palou (176.415 mph) rounded out the top 5.
Honda’s took the entire top 8 on the speed charts and 10 of the top 11. They’re eying just their 5th short oval victory in the last 13 tries.
