LEEDS, Ala — Callum Ilott is garnering some attention this weekend at the Barber Motorsports Park. The NTT INDYCAR Series rookie is driving for the only single car team in the series and despite that, is out here hanging with the heavy hitters.
He was 8th fastest in practice on Friday. He then backed that up with being 9th overall on the speed charts in Saturday morning’s session. While he didn’t make the Fast Six, Ilott still qualified his No. 77 Dallara-Chevrolet in 11th beating guys like Scott Dixon, Helio Castroneves and Will Power in qualifying.
Then, a few hours later, Ilott topped the speed charts in the franctic 30 minute final session around the 2.3-mile scenic Alabama racetrack.
Ilott, turned in a time of 1:07.0906-seconds which was good enough to be in the top 10 for the third time in three practice sessions this weekend. He led a trio of Chip Ganassi Racing drivers in the top five with last year’s champion as well as last year’s Barber race winner Alex Palou being .101-seconds arrears to Ilott. Palou, turned in a lap of 1:07.1916-seconds in his No. 10 Dallara-Honda.
Palou, was 2nd, 6th, 2nd in the three practice sessions and will start P3 on Sunday.
Marcus Ericsson (1:07.2745-seconds) was third after being 9th and 7th in the two other practices while Scott Dixon (1:07.3412-seconds) went from 6th to 4th in his second to last lap of the session. Dixon, is winless in 11 career Barber starts but does have 9 podiums in them. He was 6th and 8th in the other two practices. The thing is, Ericsson and Dixon start 12th and 13th respectively though and no race winner has ever came outside of the top 10 here.
Alexander Rossi (1:07.3529-seconds) rounded out the top five. He was 3rd on Friday and will start 5th too.
Scott McLaughlin rounded out the top six and was there in all three sessions and even starts in the top six too.
