FORT WORTH, TX — Josef Newgarden had Scott McLaughlin in his sights for what would be his first win of the 2022 NTT INDYCAR Series season on Sunday at the Texas Motor Speedway. The thing is, he was resigned to the fact that he’d not be able to catch his Team Penske teammate for the win in the XPEL 375. Then came lapped traffic slowing up McLaughlin as his No. 3 Chevrolet wouldn’t handle as well.
Newgarden, caught McLaughlin on the final lap and in the final turn, made a move to the outside in pursuit of victory. McLaughlin, didn’t counter in order to preserve a 600th win for the organization.
Newgarden’s move would work or he’d crash trying. McLaughlin would hold his line to make it at the very least, a Penske win, if not a 1-2 result.
You know the rest.
Newgarden, is $600 richer. The employees have $1k extra money in their accounts and Penske has 600 wins across all forms of motorsports.
“The captain is so true to his word. He gave me $600 in pit lane, in cash. We’re going to In-N-Out is what we’re going to do,” Newgarden said.
McLaughlin, was dejected that he wasn’t the one to get Penske his 600th win, was at least happy to see it still get done. He just had a front row seat by 6-hundreths of a second.
“I said to Roger, let’s celebrate at 500,” he said. “A testament to the team globally. The super car we had down under, NASCAR series. The best thing about it, everyone is a part of it, whether you’re on the NASCAR side, the INDYCAR side, the sports car side, back in the day the super car side. Whenever somebody wins, there’s an award for the whole organization. That’s what super cool about it. Happy for everyone at home. Hopefully I’m here for 700. We get 700, we’re going all right.”
McLaughlin, won for Penske in both INDYCAR and Super Cars. He has 49 career wins for the Captain which ranks third most trailing only Brad Keselowski (67) and Mark Donohue (59).
