INDIANAPOLIS — More driver announcements came forth on Thursday afternoon. Dreyer & Reinbold Racing unveiled that they’ll return to a two-car outfit for next May’s 106h Running of the Indianapolis 500. They’ll do so with Sage Karma in one car and Santino Ferrucci in the other. This couldn’t have been a more perfect pairing. They’ll each have shots at top 10’s and if all goes right, a chance at a win at that.

“We at DRR have been improving our Indy 500 program with the singular goal of winning the race. Sage and Santino have exceptional talent and are key components for us to achieve the goal,” said team owner Dennis Reinbold.

Karam, 26, will attempt to make his ninth ‘500, eight of which coming with DRR. The Pennsylvania native started 31st last season but drove all the way up to a seventh place result in the No. 24 Chevrolet. That was his best career finish with his other top 10 at Indy coming in his rookie start back in 2014 with them when he also started 31st and finished ninth.

He’s a hell of a talent but unfortunately has been relegated to an Indy only entry the last several years. After an impressive debut as a high school senior for that 2014 race, it led him to a brief stint with Chip Ganassi Racing in 2015. It unfortunately was a one year opportunity which left him searching for a full time ride in the series ever since.

2016, 2017 and 2018 his only rides were in the Indy 500. For 2019, it started off as Indy only but he made brief appearances with Carlin for two races, one in Iowa and the other in Toronto.

2020 saw him race for DRR in all three Indy road course races as well as the ‘500 with last year being Indy only again. Right now, this is just an Indy only ride again for 2022 but this time, he has a teammate again.

Ferrucci, 23, is a hell of a pickup. He’s a gasser. He has three top seven finishes in as many tries with two different teams for the Indy 500. Known for his knack in getting through traffic on race day, this is a match made in heaven with Karam being known as the same way.

Both also have pursued NASCAR dreams in this past season with full time INDYCAR opportunities being limited.

“Doing more ovals in NASCAR this year has helped mentally prepare more to stay focused for the longer races,” said Karam. “The potential to improve in that area is there. We just need to nail down a few things.

“We are coming off of a high from last year and the goal is to be even better in the 2022 Indy 500.”

Now, they’ll walk out of Gasoline Alley next year as teammates.

“I’ve known Sage since I was five years old. We had tremendous success in karts and hope to bring that to IndyCar come May,” said Ferrucci.

It will mark the third time in four years that DRR has shown up to Indy as a multi-car outfit. Prior to that, they showed up for six straight years with just one car. They scaled back down to one car last year. Now, they’ll grow back to two.
