The Darlington throwback weekend was moved this year from the existing Labor Day date to the new one in May. That new race has a new sponsor via an existing partner. That deal was announced a few weeks ago.
Goodyear announced then, a partnership with Darlington to be the sponsor of the throwback weekend in May. The new name for the May 9 NASCAR Cup Series race on the 1.33-mile South Carolina race track is the Goodyear 400.
Now, Goodyear has a fans sweepstakes initiative.
Starting today through May 18, fans can win a select run of exclusive throwback-inspired prizes through the “Goodyear 400 Sweepstakes.” Prizes include:
- “Blue Streak” Tires: Goodyear is bringing back its Blue Streak sidewall design – reflecting the style used in the 1960’s and 1970’s – solely for the throwback race.
- Retro Victory Lane Hats: Limited-edition Goodyear 400 hats will be exclusively given to the winning driver at Victory Lane and the winners of the sweepstakes.
- Vintage Race Posters: Goodyear is introducing a select run of throwback posters that were designed and written in the style of decades past from the 1950’s, 1960’s and 1970‘s.
As noted above, as they have in the past, Goodyear will once again replace the yellow “Eagle” logo on the sidewalls of its racing tires with a vintage “Blue Streak” sidewall design. In keeping with the race weekend’s throwback theme, the Blue Streak tires will include white Goodyear lettering and a white logo that reflect the design of NASCAR tires used in the 1960’s and 1970’s.
“Goodyear is one of the most iconic brands in the history of motorsports, so we are proud to name our spring NASCAR Cup Series race at Darlington Raceway the Goodyear 400,” said Darlington President Kerry Tharp said via a release. “Goodyear has been a part of many monumental moments in Darlington Raceway’s storied history. We look forward to writing a new chapter with Goodyear as part of the Official Throwback Weekend of NASCAR.”
This recent history is just the tip of the iceberg. Goodyear and Darlington have a long history together where this was the place Goodyear conducted its first official NASCAR tire tests at the track in 1954 and earned its first NASCAR victory in the 1959 Southern 500 with driver Jim Reed. The Goodyear 400 will mark Goodyear’s first race entitlement in North America.
