MADISON, Ill — We’re down to five races left in the 2020 season. We have have different teams represented in the top five of the standings.
Josef Newgarden’s win on Sunday put him as the only driver that’s less than 100 points behind Scott Dixon for the points lead though. Newgarden, trails Dixon by 96 points heading to the month of September.
Dixon, won Saturday’s race and was a quiet fifth on Sunday. That come after a runner-up in last weekend’s Indy 500 which paid double points. He went from +54 heading into the month to +96 leaving it.
Dixon, has five top two finishes and eight top five finishes in nine starts this year. He’s virtually unstoppable.
We have two races at Mid-Ohio then two more on the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course coming up next. Dixon, has won six times in his career at Mid-Ohio including last year’s race. He just won the July 4 race on the 2.439-mile IMS road course earlier this season and has four straight top two finishes in that race.
So, for everyone else, how can you make up over 100 points in that span?
Pato O’Ward is 119 points out in third. Takuma Sato is 142 points back in fourth. Colton Herta is 166 points out while Simon Pagenaud lost over 125 points in the month and 179 points back in sixth.
This was a great points month for Dixon.
