Playoff standings heading into Sunday’s race at Michigan

A rare doubleheader weekend is ensuing this week at the Michigan International Speedway was Kevin Harvick was victorious in Saturday’s FireKeepers Casino 400 on the Irish Hills race track. It was his fifth win of the season but if you combine that victory total with Denny Hamlin’s (5), Brad Keselowski’s (3), Joey Logano’s (2) and Martin Truex Jr’s (1), you get 16 of the 21 races won by five drivers.

They’re also the hottest drivers on the season right now too. That has set up a good wild card race because these drivers need to points their ways in without much of a shot of a win.

Clint Bowyer (+41), Matt DiBenedetto (+40) and William Byron (+16) hold the final three spots in. Erik Jones (-16), Tyler Reddick (-19) and Jimmie Johnson (-22) hold the final three spots out. These are the six to watch over the final five regular season races for the final three spots.

Bowyer, only scored two stage points on Saturday. DiBenedetto and Byron didn’t score a single point in those two stages. They finished 19th and 14th respectively.

Jones, made up 15 points in going from 31 points down to 16 points out with 12 stage points scored and an 11th place result. Reddick didn’t score any stage points and struggled all day after contact early on with Martin Truex Jr. He was 34th and 32nd respectively in the two stages and only came home 18th.

Jimmie Johnson scored one stage point and finished 12th in his No. 48 Chevrolet. He gained three points on the final spot from 25 down to 22.

We have another race on Sunday to see if these spots change any.
