Pato O’Ward technically isn’t an NTT IndyCar Series rookie. He missed being able to be labeled as one by just a few races. See, heading into the 2020 season, O’Ward had only made eight career Indy Car starts for two different teams.
So, he’d get a free pass if any “rookie mistakes” were made.
But, the Arrow McLaren SP driver has been anything but. Heading into this weekend’s twin bill at the Iowa Speedway, O’Ward already has three top 10 finishes in four starts in his No. 5 Chevrolet. On top of that, he earned the pole last Sunday in Road America as he became the third youngest Indy Car pole winner in series history. He nearly won in a second place effort.
Now, it’s to Iowa where in his only other visit to the 7/8-mile bullring, he won an Indy Lights race.
“Iowa Speedway is a very tricky but fun short oval,” O’Ward said. “The NTT INDYCAR SERIES races at Iowa are always super-exciting and eventful. I’m looking forward to building on the momentum we have so far this season and trying to make this weekend even better than last weekend. I have had a lot of success the past few years at Iowa in the Road to Indy, so I really want to keep that going. Arrow McLaren SP and Team Chevy have a good track record at this race over the past few years, which is a combination for success.”
