Iowa One Of Andretti’s Top Tracks, Can They Turn Their Season Around

While Andretti Autosport hasn’t won at Iowa since 2015, you can’t overlook them this weekend. Other than last year, in all four prior years that this race was run under the lights, Andretti Autosport won them all. Now, they have two opportunities under the lights to turn their season around too.

It’s no secret, 2020 has been a disaster for them. Four races have been run and they’ve scored just a single podium.

In the first nine years of this races’ existence at Iowa though, Andretti won seven times. They’re 0-for-4 since but can contend though despite that.

Alexander Rossi may have failed to score a top five in his career at Iowa and has led just four total laps with zero lead lap finishes, but he does have a top 11 in all four tries too.

“Another doubleheader this weekend, this time at one of the most demanding tracks we go to,” said Rossi. “We are encouraged with the steps forward that we made last weekend, and hopefully that will lead to more trophies as we continue to fight back and try to close the gap to the leaders. It’s going to be a challenge, but we are ready for it.”

Ryan Hunter-Reay is the Iowa king himself with four top two finishes in a four year span between 2012 through 2015 to go along with a third place finish in 2017.

“Night races at Iowa have always been some of the best INDYCAR racing, and the fans have always turned up to support us,” Hunter-Reay said. “We’re looking forward to being back for two races under the lights and are really focused on getting the 28 DHL team back to winning. We’ll be fighting for win No. 4 on this short oval.”

Zach Veach has just two Iowa starts (20th, 7th) where Marco Andretti’s last win came at Iowa in 2011. At one point, Andretti had four top three finishes in a six year span in Iowa.

Andretti is hoping to get their mojo back.

“Heading to Iowa Speedway this weekend, and we are looking to get the 98 car back to prime form,” said the third generation driver. “Since the track has become bumpier over the years, we have sort of lost our ‘mojo,’ and we’re ready to get that back. I would love to get a second win at Iowa and a fifth podium. Also really looking forward to having fans back with us at the track again.”

Veach, has some unfinished business.

“Extremely excited to go to Iowa,” said Veach. “I really feel like it’s a place where we can get some points back that we lost last weekend. It’s a place where I’ve always run in the top 10. My rookie year, unfortunately, I made a mistake while running fifth and finished seventh last year. With a doubleheader there, it’s a great opportunity for us to get two really good finishes. I would love to get my first win at Iowa Speedway, and it’s something we’re really focused on.”

So, while they’ve fallen a bit, look for Andretti to contend on Saturday night.
