Jimmie Johnson will be making his 19th and final Indianapolis Motor Speedway start on Sunday afternoon for the Brickyard 400. Johnson, will be chasing a potential record tying fifth win in the event, moving him into a tie with former teammate Jeff Gordon.
But, Johnson’s Indy racing career might not be over.
We know Johnson wants to race other forms of motorsports post NASCAR retirement which is occurring at seasons end. One of those interests is in Indy Car.
Johnson, was supposed to test an Arrow McLaren SP Chevrolet at the Barber Motorsports Park in April. But, with everything being shut down due to COVID-19 then, that test was eliminated.
Rumors were circulating that Johnson may run the NTT IndyCar Series’ road course race on the 2.439-mile IMS road course soon. Everything was lining up. Then it wasn’t.
Now, the interested is back up again. So much so, Johnson will test on the road course in an Indy Car next Wednesday. Johnson, will get behind the wheel of a Chip Ganassi Racing Honda. That should raise some eyes.
Johnson, has always been a Chevy driver and intended to remain that way as much as he can post NASCAR. McLaren SP is a Chevy team and made the most sense for him to make his Indy Car debut, even being a test, in a bowtie.
But, he will be in a Honda. Still, don’t look too deep into that as Johnson and Scott Dixon are good friends off the track and Chip Ganassi owns a team in NASCAR as well as IndyCar.
