40 drivers walked out of the infield at the Talladega Superspeedway on Monday afternoon. Before they got to their cars that were gridded in pit road, they all met at Bubba Wallace’s No. 43 Chevrolet.
Before pre-race ceremonies began, drivers rallied to support and stand with their fellow driver and pushed his No. 43 Richard Petty Motorsports Chevrolet Camaro to the front of the grid.
The drivers were soon joined by their respective teams and NASCAR officials. They all remained as a united group through the prayer and National Anthem.
Afterward, as Wallace climbed from his car, he sat on door’s ledge and lowered his head. Car owner Richard Petty, who hasn’t been at a race since COVID-19 hit, consoled him. Jimmie Johnson, Ryan Blaney, Ty Dillon and others hugged him.
This race was originally slated for Apr. 26, 2020 but was postponed originally until Jun. 21, 2020, due to the coronavirus pandemic, but inclement weather pushed the race back an additional day.
Late last night, NASCAR confirmed that a noose was hung in Wallace’s garage stall of the 2.6)-mile Alabama race track. After a dark moment in this sport, gave way to a touching historic memory.
