Kurt Busch Rebounds From Lap 228 Crash To Finish 7th Sunday In Bristol

Kurt Busch tweeted out a photo of a rabbit being pulled out of a hat on Sunday night. That was no doubt in reference to his top 10 finish in his damaged No. 1 Chevrolet earlier on in the day at the Bristol (Tenn) Motor Speedway.

Busch, had a fast race car but pit strategy had him mid pack for most of the first half of Sunday’s Food City 500. The six-time winner on the .526-mile Tennessee oval, knew he just had to be patient and the track position would come. It always does there.

Unfortunately, he was in the wrong spot at the wrong time and was rear ended in part of the Lap 228 caution in Turn 3. The back of his car suffered heavy damage and he raced a majority of the second half of the race a lap down.

Once he got his lap back and several contenders started making mistakes, in came Busch to pounce. When he looked up in the end, his No. 1 was P7 on the scoring pylon on Lap 500 — the final lap.

“Wow, what a day for us,” Busch said. “The Monster Energy Chevrolet – not one straight panel on it. We went through a lot of damage, went through a lot of looseness early in the race. Man, we had a lot of lucky breaks that fell our way there at the end to be able to come home seventh.

“There were a couple of guys that wiped each other out, couple of guys chose the wrong lane on the restart and we were able to take advantage with our long run speed. We’ve got to work on our short run speed and how the car drives when it’s on stickers. But we’ll keep digging – we’re not going to give up.”

Busch, now has three straight top seven finishes on the season and six in the last seven races overall. He also has four straight top 10 finishes at Bristol as well.
