Should A Choose Cone Be Used? Drivers Say So

There’s a lot of change going on in NASCAR right now. From single day shows behind closed doors to no practice or qualifying, it’s a change of the times. One rule though that’s gaining some steam in the industry is that drivers would like to have the cone rule added.

What that rule is, on restarts, a cone is placed on the track and you can choose which lane you want to restart in. That way, if one lane is the superior one like we saw the outside lane was at Darlington, you can all choose to restart there.

In turn, this leads to strategy. You know not everyone will choose the same lane. Maybe the top five will, but how deep will guys go before they choose to restart in the non preferred lane, but be up front?

Put your money where your mouth is.

“I’ve been bringing it up for years, said Joey Logano of the cone rule. “It’s not news for any driver here. Every meeting that I’m in I always bring it up. I see nothing other than a good value that it could bring. It brings another strategy to the table. You don’t have luck being involved whether you see guys hitting their brakes at the end of pit road which No. 1 isn’t very safe and No. 2 you try and line yourself up sixth and the guy in front has a speeding penalty and you now line up sixth and in the wrong lane and think ‘man I really blew it. That happens out there. So many times everyone is trying to play a game. Just put a cone out there and say go left or right. It’s simple. It’s an easy thing to do. I think it’s the right time to do it because there’s already plenty of change going around. I’d love to try it. I’d love to have it in our sport.”

Martin Truex Jr agrees, saying he needed it on Wednesday night. He lost several spots because of restating in the wrong lane.

“I sure would have loved to have seen it the other night,” said Truex Jr. “We got murdered on that deal. I think we had one outside restart the whole race. Probably had a top three car but we finished 10th because we lined up on the inside of almost every restart. It was frustrating. I would definitely be for that. I think it works well.”

Kevin Harvick did finish third in Wednesday’s Toyota 500 and said that he hated the restarts as well.

“The whole night we wound up restarting on the bottom of the racetrack.” said Harvick. “We’d lose three or four spots every time we’d restart. Definitely didn’t get the good end of the draw on the restarts.”

This seems like a simple rule and one that could easily become enforceable.
