The Automobile Club of Monaco announced on Tuesday their 2021 race plans. The eye glaring “of note” on there? The Grand Prix of Monaco will take place on Sunday, May 23 of next year. When checking in on Memorial Day for 2021, you’d see that the date is Monday, May 31. With the Indianapolis 500 having a longstanding history of racing Memorial Day weekend, it doesn’t take much wits to see that the 105th Running of the Indianapolis 500 will take place on Sunday, May 30 next season.
I wrote just last week how the new budget caps on Formula One teams could inadvertently lead teams like Ferrari and maybe a few others over to the NTT IndyCar Series. In turn though, F1 should work on moving Monaco away from Memorial Day weekend and capitalizing on the fun.

Then, four days later this happens. Monaco, hasn’t had a race directly one week behind it on the schedule since 2005, so I don’t think that happens again in 2021. It would have been 11 years (2010) that both races were off the same weekend together but in 2010, Turkey held a race on Memorial Day weekend, ending any chance of F1 drivers coming over then. The last true time that F1 in general and IndyCar didn’t clash on Memorial Day weekend was 2003.

Unfortunately, and I hate to have to do this, but with even with these races not conflicting anymore, I don’t see how it could work to have some F1 drivers do both races. I know, I’m pouring cold water on your big dream.
But, here’s why.
First off, the earliest any F1 team, Ferrari included, would even come to race in IndyCar would be 2022. That’s the year the new engine regulations would come out for American open wheel series. They’d gain nothing to come over next year, especially with us still dealing with this COVID-19 pandemic.
Next, and most importantly, even if some F1 drivers had any interest in racing in Monaco one weekend and Indy the next, they still would have to qualify to make the show. As it stands, qualifying for Indy is the weekend prior to the ‘500 itself. According to the schedule, the F1 drivers will be halfway across the world in Monaco likely practicing on Friday and qualifying on Saturday of that weekend. They’d race on Sunday. How can those drivers also be over here qualifying for the ‘500 at the same time?
Saturday-Sunday would be Indy 500 Time Trials. They can’t be in two places at the same time. They can say they want to race in the Indy 500 a week after Monaco, but they first have to qualify and barring some catastrophic collapse, we should have over 33 entries going for 33 spots. The F1 drivers aren’t going to get preferential treatment and get guaranteed spots into the ‘500, nor a separate allotted qualifying time, so I just don’t see how even with Monaco getting moved to a week earlier, that this could work.
