NASCAR Close To Green Light At Pocono In Late June, Just With No Fans

NASCAR got their season restarted on Sunday at the Darlington Raceway. For the first time in nearly two months, live sports were on our TVs.

Now, what’s next.

More: When Can Fans Return To The Stands

NASCAR returns to the same 1.366-mile South Carolina race track on Tuesday for some Xfinity Series action. The Cup boys are back in action again at Darlington on Wednesday. Between now and next Wednesday, NASCAR has six more races planned including the two aforementioned, two Cup races at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, as well as one more NXS race on the 1.5 mile oval (Tuesday) and a Truck Series event (Monday).

NASCARs plan is to stay close to home. That’s why much of June will consist of Bristol (Tenn) Motor Speedway, Atlanta Motor Speedway, Martinsville (VA) Speedway, Homestead-Miami Speedway and Talladega Superspeedway. In terms of closeness of those venues to base in Charlotte, NC, the first seven tracks up are seven of the top 9 in terms of mileage from base.

Homestead (June 14) and Talladega (June 21) are the first branch away races that may require overnight travel. While NASCAR didn’t announce their next batch of plans, those are getting clearer.

We know Indianapolis will remain in place for the Fourth of July weekend. Pocono now looks to remain pat a week prior too.

On Monday, Pennsylvania governor Tom Wolf said that NASCAR should be able hold the doubleheader weekend at the Pocono Raceway as scheduled in late June so long as the coronavirus situation improves in the area.

Pocono resides in Monroe County, which as of Monday, is currently under Wolf’s strictest orders, or a red designation. But Wolf also said on Monday that if the county moves to yellow, then NASCAR may hold the two races as long as there are no spectators present and guidelines are followed to keep competitors safe.

NASCAR has stated recently that when they do doubleheader weekends, Pocono will be the first place they do so at. That means that July will be the soonest fans can attend a race in any capacity for NASCAR.
