Chip Ganassi Racing Fires Kyle Larson Amid Racial Slur Fallout

INDIANAPOLIS — The fallout from a racial slur used by Kyle Larson on Sunday night continues. First, Larson was suspended indefinitely by his team (Chip Ganassi Racing) as well as NASCAR on Monday morning. Then, he lost all three of his major sponsors on his No. 42 Chevrolet (McDonald’s, Credit One Bank and Clover). Then, he was suspended by iRacing and indefinitely told to stay away from other sponsors including Lucas Oil as well as his manufacturer in Chevrolet.

All the sponsors and manufacturer said that they would remain with Chip Ganassi Racing but wouldn’t associate with Larson and that if he remained with the team, the car would basically be blank.

In this day and age of racing, no way can a car not run without sponsorship. So, on Tuesday, Larson was officially let go from CGR and terminated as a Chevy driver too.

“After much consideration, Chip Ganassi Racing has determined that it will end its relationship with driver Kyle Larson,” the team said on Tuesday morning. “As we said before, the comments that Kyle made were both offensive and unacceptable especially given the values of our organization. As we continued to evaluate the situation with all the relevant parties, it became obvious that this was the only appropriate course of action to take.“

Chevy issued a statement saying, “As previously stated, Chevrolet does not tolerate the inappropriate behavior exhibited by Kyle Larson. As a result, Chevrolet is immediately terminating its relationship with Mr. Larson.”

Larson, came up through the ranks as a Toyota developmental driver but Chip Ganassi got a hold of him shortly after. The California native won in each of the top three levels of NASCAR including being a six-time winner in the Cup Series. He was a hot comomdity as an impending free agent.

See, there were going to be a lot of top rides avaiable at seasons end. As we sit here today, we know two rides at Hendrick Motorsports, two at Stewart-Haas Racing, one at Penske and one at Joe Gibbs Racing are available. He was mentioned as the top candidate to go to any of those teams. He was also rumored to be staying put at Ganassi too.

Basically, Larson was heading towards a big pay day this season at some point. Instead, he’s taking a big pay cut.

Larson, is now unemployed and will have a hard time finding a new ride for 2021. With losing virtually every sponsor with the exception of a couple, it will be hard to find enough funding to secure a new ride.
