IndyCar Releases Updated Schedule, Season Opener In Belle Isle, Mid-Ohio, Portland And Gateway Moved, St. Pete Could Be Season Finale

INDIANAPOLIS — With Thursday’s historic announcement that the Month of May in Indianapolis has been shifted to this summer, there’s some other races that were moved as a result.

First off, the new 2020 NTT IndyCar Series season will open Saturday May 30 on the streets of Belle Isle. The annual doubleheader weekend will see races 1 and 2 take place on the Detroit area street circuit.

The first four races remain in their same spot while the Fourth of July which was originally supposed to be an off week will see the GMR Grand Prix run in a doubleheader weekend at IMS with NASCAR (Brickyard 400). Then, Toronto and Iowa will take place as normally schedule after that, before a much needed two-week break. From May 30-July 18, IndyCar would have ran eight races in an eight week span.

Then, this is where everything changes. Mid-Ohio moves up to Aug. 9 before everything on the oval for the Month of May kicks off after. The 104th Running of the Indianapolis 500 will race on Aug. 23 then the series heads west to Gateway on Aug. 30 for a Sunday afternoon race instead of a Saturday night affair. Portland moves back to Sept. 13 instead of Labor Day weekend and will race a week prior to Laguna Seca. Then, the series will try to reschedule St. Pete as the season finale from there.

For the series, they knocked it out the park. While you never want to move the Month of May festivities and we’re still a little less than two months away from the 104th Running of the Indianapolis 500, IndyCar worked diligently and smart. With so many events being moved already, they didn’t need to wait any longer and get lost in the shuffle for on air TV time.

IndyCar, the tracks and NBC Sports all worked together and came up with a great plan to get the revised schedule out. Now, they have dates and locations updated including an Indy 500 plan.
