INDIANAPOLIS — We knew that a decision would be coming soon on which layout the NASCAR Xfinity Series would be using this July at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Matt DiBenedetto tested two different course layouts six days ago and on Tuesday afternoon, NASCAR has taken their findings and made a decision.
Last Wednesday, DiBenedetto tested a Team Penske prepared car on the 12 turn and 14 turn road course. NASCAR has decided to use the 14-turn layout for the July 4 race.
“We want to put on the best race we can,” Wayne Auton said on Tuesday. We got on the racetrack about 9:30 in the morning, and by the 11:30 lunch break, Matt told us what he thought was going to be able to put on the best race. With what we could see with him running the 14-turn compared to the 12-turn definitely, it’s going to be a great race.”
Auton, said that teams won’t be able to test between now and July but will be given extended practice time during the race weekend. He also said that based on Goodyear’s data from the test, that teams will use a tire combination that they use at Road America and Mid-Ohio.
