Leist Shifts From IndyCar To IMSA For 2020

INDIANAPOLIS — The writing was on the wall, Matheus Leist was likely going to be out of his ride at AJ Foyt Racing. Following two highly disappointing years, the team as well as the driver were looking at going in different directions.

Unfortunately, Leist’s talents were never able to be showed with Foyt. The team has been in a flux of disarray since the second half of the 2013 season. Leist, was just the latest casualty of a long list of drivers that couldn’t get quality equipment to compete.

In 34 career Indy Car starts with Foyt, Leist had a grand total of two top 10 finishes — a best result being a fourth place run this past May in the INDYCAR Grand Prix. 25 of his 34 races saw him finish 15th or worse. It was clear, he and Foyt needed a break and on Saturday, Leist found one. With the list of available rides dwindling for the 2020 NTT IndyCar Series season, Leist, 21, had to look elsewhere to stay busy next season.

It was announced this morning that the Brazilian will race full time in IMSA for the 2020 season. He will join Sebastien Bourdais not only in IMSA, but for the same organization. Leist, will pilot the No. 85 Chevrolet JDC Miller entry while Bourdais pilots the other car.

Leist, is happy to remain in the Chevrolet family and is eyeing a breakout season that will start next month in Daytona.
