FORT WORTH, TX – The NASCAR Gander Outdoors Truck Series had not one, not two, but three practice sessions on Thursday from the Texas Motor Speedway. These were in preparation for Friday night’s SpeedyCash.com 400 (9 p.m. ET/FS1/MRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio).
Mix that with already having one race weekend on the 1.5-mile track in the books back in April, and you can see that these teams should be well prepared for what’s at stake on Friday.
In two of the three sessions, Johnny Sauter topped the speed charts in his No. 13 Ford. Sauter, turned a speed of 184.168 mph in session No. 2 then followed that up with circling the Denton County track with a lap of 183.237 mph in final practice.
Sauter, already has a win under his belt this season with a victory last month at Dover. He has five top 10 finishes in his last seven starts on the season overall.
Ben Rhodes in his No. 99 Ford was quickest in the other session run on Thursday with a top speed of 180.681 mph in the first of the three practices run earlier in the afternoon. The Kentucky native has five straight top five finishes on the season including two straight top fours.
Sauter, was P2 in the first session (180.373 mph) while Grant Enfinger (180.144 mph), Sheldon Creed (180.066 mph) and Brett Moffitt (179.850 mph) rounded out the top five in session No. 1.
In session No. 2, Enfinger (183.667 mph), Creed (183.045 mph), Matt Crafton (182.266 mph) and Todd Gilliland (182.094 mph) rounded out the top five in that session. Also, in the penultimate practice of the day, Stewart Friesen crashed his No. 52 Chevrolet hard and had to go to a backup Truck as a result.
In final practice, Crafton (183.138 mph), Austin Dillon (183.057 mph), Tyler Dippel (182.902 mph) and Anthony Alfredo (182.865 mph) rounded out the top five.
At this point, it appears that Friday night’s race, which pays $50k to the winner, will go through ThorSprot Racing.
