Power Hoping To Ride Wave Of Momentum Into Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix (3 p.m. ET/NBC/INDYCAR Radio Network)

There’s no rest for the weary in the NTT IndyCar Series. Will Power is fully aware of that. Power, says that the Month of May annually takes a lot out of drivers, both mentally and physically. But, there’s no time to rest. The series is back in action this weekend for not one, but two races on the streets of Belle Isle.

The Chevrolet Detroit Grand Prix (3 p.m. ET/NBC/INDYCAR Radio Network) is a doubleheader weekend for dual 70 Lap races around the Detroit area island. It’s a race that’s so pivotal for a points championship because each race pays full points.

Power, knows how crucial this weekend is for his chances for a championship later in the year. Plus, this is an event that’s up there in importance to win for a Penske driver as well.

“We have another huge weekend in Detroit,” said Power. “Outside of Indy, this is the race we want to win. It means so much to Roger (Penske), the Penske Corporation and the city. Unfortunately, we just haven’t had the success we want over the last few years. It’s a bit puzzling, too, because these types of circuits really fit the wheelhouse of myself and the Verizon Chevy team.”

See, Detroit is in the backyard of Roger Penske and Chevrolet. It’s an important race for them, especially since Penske runs this track. But, a Honda driver has won all four races run the last two years with the last Penske victory coming by Power back in 2016. In fact, since 2015, Penske has won just one of the last eight races on the 2.35-mile street course.

But, maybe that changes this weekend. Penske boasts a ton of momentum coming into their home race. Simon Pagenaud swept the Month of May in winning both races at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. For the ‘500 itself, Penske had all three of their full time drivers not only qualify in the Fast Nine, but they all finished in the top five too. Now, it’s time to capitalize on it.

“We are all running on a little momentum with our strong runs at Indy; all of us in the top five with Simon (Pagenaud) winning was a big day for Team Penske,” Power continued.

With their improvement on their street course programs for 2019, this could be a big weekend for the Penske trio.
