Newman Scores Another Top 10 Finish With 7th Place Run In GEICO 500

TALLADEGA, Ala – Ryan Newman is doing his best to get Roush/Fenway Racing back to relevance again. In his first season with the team, Newman is exceling in that category. His engineering background is helping this team immensely.

After 10 races to start the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season off with, Newman is +17 in the playoff standings in 14th place. While some thought that maybe RFR was still another year or two away from contending, Newman is showing just how close they really are from taking off.

Newman, brought his No. 6 Ford home seventh in Sunday’s GEICO 500 for his third consecutive top 10 finish on the season. What’s impressive is, if you go back a full month, Newman has this car up front on all sorts of tracks.

He finished 11th on a 1.5-mile track at Texas. He backed that up with two straight ninth place runs on short tracks at Bristol and Richmond. Now, he finishes seventh on a superspeedway.

“That was crazy,” said Newman on his day at Talladega.” I took the inside line and started there and stayed there. Never had many places to go but either way it was a good run and a good team effort. Proud of the entire team to be able to keep it together. I think we kept most of the race cars on the race track which was probably a lot of luck. We will go on to Dover.”

Newman, said that he wasn’t surprised that Chevrolet finished 1-2-3-5-6 and that he thought it was mostly luck.

“They did a good job of orchestrating the pit but I don’t think that won them the race. … We put two tires on it there at the end and went. We just ran out of time. I think we finished sixth, I feel like I was ahead of one of those guys. It was a good run for the Acorns Ford. We got some good stage points and race points. We need to get a win. We need to get a top five. We have top 10s rolling and that is good. We need to keep going in the right direction.”

If he can keep this up, then Newman can certainly make the playoffs without having to win a race. But, if they keep this momentum going, they will be in position to win a race by time the season comes to a close and that’s all you can ask for.
