Garrett Smithley is set to make his fourth start in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series as the Pennsylvania native will drive the No. 77 Chevrolet with Spire Motorsports in Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 (2 p.m. ET/FOX/PRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio) at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.
While no official announcement has been made yet, the weekend’s entry list was unveiled on Monday afternoon and Smithley’s name was on it with Spire. The team even confirmed the move on social media.
Smithley’s previous three starts came with StarCom and Premium Motorsports in 2018. He made his debut with StarCom at Michigan in June when he finished 39th. His next start came with the team at Kentucky when he finished 36th. Then, he made his third and final start in the return trip to Michigan in August with Premium Motorsports. He’d come home 32nd.
Smithley, 26, also competes in the NASCAR XFINITY Series with JD Motorsports. He’s made 100 career starts in the series with four top 10 finishes. He finished 24th in the season opener at Daytona last weekend.
Spire ran Jamie McMurray in the car at Daytona with a partnership with Chip Ganassi Racing. McMurray, brought the No. 40 Chevrolet home 22nd last Sunday in what’s possibly his final Cup Series start.
The team purchased Furniture Row Racing’s charter in the offseason and has a guaranteed spot in the field for all 36 races in 2019.
