INDIANAPOLIS — Porsche Penske Motorsports delivered a perfect weekend. They were very Penske like in having led every speed chart including going 1-2 on Saturday morning, 1-2 in qualifying on Saturday afternoon and now 1-2 in the TireRack.com Battle on the Bricks capping a great year on Penske’s home turf in 2023.
While Matt Campbell and Felipe Nasr were quickest on Friday, quickest on Saturday and started on the pole, a mistake on the opening lap and the final pit sequence allowed the No. 6 Porsche 963 that was driven by Nick Tandy and Mathieu Jaminet to capitalize.
It had to be somewhat heartbreaking for the No. 7 Porsche 963 to be quickest in everything this weekend, but not being the ones to kiss the bricks on race day. Still, it was a good enough job to bring Penske a 1-2 finish in a race that means more to them here than at any other point of the IMSA season.
Josef Newgarden won this past May’s Indianapolis 500 and bookended the season with an IMSA triumph too.
Penske has won the Brickyard 400 (2018 with Brad Keselowski), the Xfinity Series race on both the oval (2012 with Brad Keselowski) and road course (2021 with Austin Cindric), the GMR Grand Prix (5 times), the Harvest Grand Prix (swept 2020) and the Gallagher Grand Prix (2021 – Will Power).
He’s won 19 Indy 500’s, 18 poles and 18 Pit Stop Competition victories.
The only thing missing was an IMSA road course win. Now, he has it.
