INDIANAPOLIS — The weather was Penske perfect on Friday from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. It’s why it wasn’t a shock to see a Penske Porsche on top of the timing charts when the opening practice for the IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship came to a close.
The No. 7 Porsche 963 driven by Felipe Nasr and Matt Campbell were P1 at 1:15.184-seconds. The time was about a half-second slower than the quickest time in July’s two-day test. Still, on a season that no one has won two straight races in, this car is after being the first as they won the last time out in Road America.
A Penske win in Sunday’s TireRack.com Battle on the Bricks (1 p.m. ET, NBC) would give the Captain an Indy 500 win and IMSA win in the same year here.
He’ll have some stiff competition ahead though.
Points leaders Ricky Taylor and Filipe Albuquerque were only .22-seconds back of the Penske Porsche on Friday with a top lap of 1:15.206-seconds around the 14-turn, 2.439-mile road course.
This group is winless on the season but consistency has them on top of the points with two races remaining. They enter having scored 2 podiums in the last 2 races run. They were also P6, P8 and P7 in the test sessions (they didn’t run session 3) in July.
Renger van der Zande and Sebastien Bourdais’ No. 01 Cadillac L-MDh was P3 (1:15.400-seconds). They were third overall in the test too and after their third podium of the season.
The pair of BMW M Team RLL entries rounded out the top five with the No. 25 BMW M Hybrid V8 (1:15.629-seconds) and the No. 24 BMW M Hybrid V8 (1:15.702-seconds) rounding out the session that was stopped twice for minor incidents.
The TDS Racing ORECA LMP2 entry driven by Steven Thomas and Mikkel Jensen led the way in that class.
In LMP3, Nolan Siegel was P1.
For GTD Pro, the Vasser Sullivan Racing entry of Jack Hawksworth and Ben Barnicoat was quickest in the five car group.
For GTD, the No. 96 Turner Motorsports BMW M4 GT3 driven by Patrick Gallagher and Robby Foley were tops. Points leader and dominator of the season, the No. 1 Paul Miller Racing BMW M4 GT3 was only P8.
The series is back in action early tomorrow morning with practice at 8:55 a.m. ET. Qualifying to set the field for Sunday’s race will contest at 1 p.m. ET.
