Felix Rosenqvist began the weekend talking about his future. He said on Friday that we’d know his 2024 plans in the next 2-6 days. Well, two days later, he was bringing his No. 6 Dallara-Chevrolet home P2 in Sunday’s BITNILE.com Grand Prix of Portland.
Rosenqvist had a hell of a drive from 11th. The only reason he was even back there at the start was due to his car having an electrical issue late in the second round of qualifying. He didn’t get to go back out late to improve upon his time.
“Yeah, it’s been a really good weekend for us,” said Rosenqvist. “The Arrow McLaren SmartStop was really good rolling off the truck.
“Yeah, I was really bummed yesterday after qualifying. We had something break in the steering rack, and we had to pit before we could do our lap in Q2. So there was definitely more in it than our starting position showed.
“Yeah, what a race. That was really good fun. It kind of went our way as well. We kind of gambled on staying out on reds, but it worked out with the yellow in the end.
“We had to obviously save the tires a bit, so I think it wasn’t the winning strategy, but it was for sure enough for a podium. Really happy with the comeback we did.”
He didn’t stay midpack long. With being on the Firestone primary tires, he cycled ahead of the 6 drivers in front of him who started on the Firestone alternate tires.
Rosenqvist first hit pit lane with his Arrow McLaren Racing teammate of Pato O’Ward on Lap 29. With Will Power’s incident early, it left these two battling for third behind the Chip Ganassi Racing teammates of Alex Palou and Scott Dixon.
Rosenqvist with his elbows out, snatched the third spot after the first stint.
He’d stay there until the final pit sequence for which he stayed out longer than everyone else before making his final stop. Palou pit for the final time on Lap 79. Dixon did so two laps later on Lap 81. Rosenqvist took over the lead and was running this stint as long as he could to minimize the distance on the final stint on the alternate tires but Agustin Canapino got off course in Turn 12 on Lap 83 and the pits were left open for Rosenqvist to come down.
He’d do so on Lap 84. With the caution coming out, Rosenqvist exited P2 and had a couple of lapped cars between he and third place Dixon.
He’d stay there for the rest of the way and score his sixth career podium finish in his 78th career start.
Rosenqvist now has three top eight finishes over the last five races run.
