Hight takes Funny Car Call Out victory Sunday at IRP

CLERMONT, Ind — Robert Hight made shockwaves for the 2022 Pep Boys NHRA Funny Car Callout by calling out Bob Tasca III. As the top pick, why pick out the second best a year ago?

It worked out as he beat Tasca III. However, he lost to Ron Capps in the finals.

Capps, not only won this event last year, but he won the U.S. Nationals too. That’s why Hight remarkably called him out on Saturday to be his first round opponent on Sunday.

It’s No. 1 vs. No. 2 in Round 1.

Hight put his money where his mouth is by not only beating Capps in Round 1, but Cruz Pedregon in the semifinals and Matt Hagan in the finals to take home $80k as a result of being the 2023 Pep Boys Call Out winner at Indy.

Hight’s reasoning to pick Capps was simple – he’d have to see him eventually. By calling out Capps on Saturday allowed Hight to have lane choice. If he had won that matchup, he’d have one less driver to worry about and as a result, with three other winners and Capps not being one of them, he may have lane choice for Round 2 as well.

That’s exactly how it played out.

Hight had lane choice and picked Pedregon as his semifinal opponent.

In the other side of the bracket, it was Hagan vs. John Force as Hagan called out Tim Wilkerson on Saturday and knocked him out in the opening round.

Bob Tasca III had the second pick on Saturday and called out John Force. Force upset Tasca and but dropped the semifinal matchup to Hagan.

It was a wild showdown that saw No. 1 vs. No. 2 and No. 3 vs. No. 5 seeds lineup in Round 1.

Hight is hopeful that this win prevails him to his 100th final round appearance and a Dodge Power Brokers U.S. Nationals win on Monday just as it did Capps last year.
