Sunday’s Pep Boys NHRA Funny Car All-Star Callout matchup set

CLERMONT, Ind — Robert Hight made shockwaves for the 2022 Pep Boys NHRA Funny Car Callout by calling out Bob Tasca III. As the top pick, why pick out the second best a year ago?

It worked out as he beat Tasca III. However, he lost to Ron Capps in the finals.

Capps, not only won this event last year, but he won the U.S. Nationals too. That’s why Hight remarkably called him out on Saturday to be his first round opponent on Sunday.

It’s No. 1 vs. No. 2 in Round 1.

That left the next pick going to Tasca III who was the No. 3 seed. He chose legend John Force to be his first round opponent. That’s No. 3 vs. No. 5.

Matt Hagan was the next to pick as he had to choose between Alexis DeJoria, Cruz Pedregon and Tim Wilkerson. He chose Wilkerson.

Hagan sees Wilkerson as a mentor and like his grandpa so why not race him in Round 1. As a result, it left DeJoria and Pedregon as the final first round matchup.

Standings for the Callout were based on qualifying points since last year’s specialty race, with Hight earning the most (3,235) leading into Indy.

The driver who makes the quickest winning run in the opening round will get to select their semifinal opponent, ensuring plenty of drama and action throughout the Callout.

Capps won this event last year and used it to propel him to his first US Nationals victory a day later for the first time in 26 tries.

The Pep Boys NHRA Funny Car All-Star Callout begins at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 3, with the semifinals at 3:20 p.m. and the finals at 5:15 p.m., with television coverage taking place from 4-5:30 ET on FOX.
