CLERMONT, Ind — There’s events inside of events this weekend at IRP with a pair of specialty races running on both Saturday and Sunday.
First up is the Mission Foods #2Fast2Tasty Challenge on Saturday. It’s a rematch of the previous rounds final four.
Top Fuel:
Antron Brown vs Mike Salinas
Leah Pruett vs Justin Ashley
In Brainerd, Brown beat Salinas and Pruett over Ashley. Then Brown bested Pruett. What happens when they run it back on Saturday? Ashley is the points leader in this category as well as on the season overall.
Funny Car:
Ron Capps vs Bob Tasca III
Robert Hight vs John Force
Capps beat Hight in Brainerd for the win in the final round. That’s also a rematch of the final round for the US Nationals win a year ago too.
Pro Stock
Dallas Glenn vs Aaron Stanfield
Kyle Koretsky vs Deric Kramer
In Brainerd, Glenn and Koretsky met in the finals with Glenn coming out on top.
Pro Stock Bikes
Gaige Herrera vs Angie Smith
Eddie Krawiec vs Matt Smith
The matchup between Krawiec and Smith is a battle of the last two US Nationals winners in this category. Meanwhile, Herrera has been tearing up the season.
Then on Sunday we’ll witness the Pep Boys NHRA Funny Car All-Star Callout.
It’s an eight driver Funny Car field with Robert Hight earning the right to be first to call out his opponent for the first round meeting. He’ll have to chose from defending Callout winner Ron Capps, Bob Tasca III, Matt Hagan, John Force, Alexis DeJoria, Cruz Pedregon, and Tim Wilkerson.
Standings for the Callout were based on qualifying points since last year’s specialty race, with Hight earning the most (3,235) leading into Indy. Capps will get the next pick, going down the line of the next highest-seeded driver until all first-round matchups are set. Plus, the driver who makes the quickest winning run in the opening round will get to select their semifinal opponent, ensuring plenty of drama and action throughout the Callout.
Capps won this event last year and used it to propel him to his first US Nationals victory a day later for the first time in 26 tries.
The Pep Boys NHRA Funny Car All-Star Callout begins at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 3, with the semifinals at 3:20 p.m. and the finals at 5:15 p.m., with television coverage taking place from 4-5:30 ET on FOX.
