Pit crew changes made this week for multiple teams

On Monday, it was announced that the Wood Brothers and Team Penske would make a team swap. Harrison Burton’s No. 21 Ford team would move over to Austin Cindric’s No. 2 Ford team and Cindric’s back over to Burton’s.

Essentially, the 21 car is the 2 and the 2 the 21 without the sponsor or number changes. Brian Wilson shifts over to reunite with Cindric while Jeremy Bullins slides over to crew chief Burton’s car.

Wilson and Cindric worked together in the past in both ARCA and the NASCAR Xfinity Series. They won 13 times in Xfinity competition including the 2020 series championship.

Bullins won the 99th race for the Wood Brothers with Ryan Blaney back in 2017 in Pocono and is now after win No. 100 for the team as when Blaney moved over to Penske for the 2018 season, Bullins went with him. Now, he’s back with the Stuart, Virgina based team.

That’s not the only changes being made on pit road. Joe Gibbs Racing will move Ty Gibbs’ pit crew over to Christopher Bell’s and Bell’s crew moves over to Gibbs’ car. The reason for this is simple – the 54 crew is operating better than the 20 team. They won the Pit Crew Competition during the All-Star race weekend and have cranked out fast stop after fast stop all season. With Gibbs not being a part of the postseason and Bell being in it, why not make the swap?

That’s not unprecedented as this happens almost every postseason of teammates that are no longer in the playoffs getting an all-star type pit crew for the drivers that are in.

Plus, with the first move, neither driver are in the playoffs either so it’s a good move to give both teams 10 races with their new drivers to form a bond in preparation for 2024.
