Ty Gibbs came into Sunday’s Go Bowling at The Glen hopeful of a potential career day. This may be his first full-time season in NASCAR’s premiere series but a win? It wasn’t out of the question.
4 of his 12 career Xfinity Series wins came on road courses including just a week ago in Indianapolis. A day before, he led 70 of 86 laps before being punted by Sam Mayer for the win in overtime.
With a fourth place starting spot, the same position Michael McDowell won from in last Sunday’s Verizon 200, Gibbs had a shot at it.
“I feel like I prepare the same for every race and with my little experience in the Cup Series compared to these guys, I have to work really hard at it and try to just do the best I can and go win,’’ said Gibbs, who drives the No. 54 JGR Toyota.
Gibbs has made a nice run at the cut line recently but McDowell’s Indy win also negated all that he and also gained too.
“I was closer than I am now,’’ he said of losing points in the last couple weeks. “But it’s really cool and I’m very blessed to be in this position and I’ve got a great team around me and it would be great to make the Playoffs.
“I think you just go win or you somehow have great points days.”
That’s exactly what happened on Sunday. Gibbs netted 15 stage points via being 4th at the end of Stage 1 and 3rd at the conclusion of the second stage. It’s just that he didn’t have enough in the final run to gain two spots for the win.
Instead, he’d lose two and finish fifth.
“I felt like we were really fast,” Gibbs said. “We had a really fast Monster Toyota Camry. I just didn’t do a good job getting through the guys in front of us. I feel like we were much faster than the three in front of us. And I just couldn’t get by them.”
Still, it was a day that he gained 17 points but it wasn’t quite good enough as he’s 32 down after being 47 behind entering.
