Rosenqvist hopeful 14th place start leads to 2nd career win on Sunday in Nashville

NASHVILLE — Felix Rosenqvist still doesn’t know yet what his 2024 plans will be. He didn’t at this point last year either. With the uncertainty of the Alex Palou situation a year ago, Rosenqvist didn’t know if he had a home with Arrow McLaren Racing for this season or not.

It worked out in his favor. Now, he’s back in the same scenario. However, just like last year, he just knows that he has to let his driving do the talking.

He comes to Sunday’s Big Machine Music City Grand Prix (12 p.m. ET, NBC, INDYCAR Radio Network) on the heels of a fourth place finish the last time out in Iowa. In fact, he said that he had never been more bummed about a fourth-place finish as it ruined a good drive up.

“Hell of a day for us and glad we’ve got some momentum. Wish I was on the podium though,” he rued.

He came from 16th and blamed Will Power for forcing him up out of the racing groove on the final restart that setup a three lap shootout. He’d lose another spot to Alex Palou to drop him down to fourth in the end.

Still, they overcame a practice crash in Toronto to qualify 5th and finish 10th. He was third in the last street race prior in Detroit and seventh in Long Beach.

The last time here, he finished seventh. He was 8th in 2021. Can he go on an end of season surge again?

“It’s super cool to be back in Nashville,” Rosenqvist said via a team release ahead of this weekend’s race. “It’s obviously one of the most fun cities in the Midwest and the U.S. It’s really a growing city, and it’s awesome to be here representing the NTT INDYCAR SERIES.

“I love the track layout; there have been some dramatic events there in the past. This is my third time coming here, and it’s one of those where you have to survive until the end because there’s so much going on, especially in the restarts. We’ll see if we can be a little quicker this year and have a good weekend.”

Rosenqvist will come from 14th on Sunday to try and win for the second time of his Indy Car career. Despite being in Row 7, he feels like he can win from there though on Sunday.

“That was very close, just four-thousandths of a second from transferring to Round 2,” he said after qualifying. “I’m a bit disappointed because it was a good lap, but some small things kept us from getting there. I think little limiter hits and stuff like that would’ve been enough to transfer, but it’s super tight.”

“At this track, I don’t think starting position is hugely important. Having no warmup is going to make it a bit more of a guessing game going into the race, but we’re pretty good at guessing, so we should be all right.”

Last year, Scott Dixon won from 14th. Can Rosenqvist do so a year later?

“This hasn’t really been the smoothest weekend, so it was kind of a big step to take the No. 6 NTT DATA Arrow McLaren Chevrolet into qualifying, but I thought the car felt really good. The balance was good. It’s just tight out there. I think having two sets of Firestone Greens will be helpful tomorrow.
