Josef Newgarden won Saturday’s Hy-Vee Homefront 250 at the Iowa Speedway. Now, with Sunday’s lineup already set from qualifying earlier this morning, here’s what’s at stake for the Hy-Vee One Step 250 (2 p.m. ET, NBC, INDYCAR Radio Network).
- Can Newgarden Sweep The Weekend – The doubleheader format in general started in the series in 2013 and only two times has someone swept both races in the same weekend. Scott Dixon did it in Toronto in 2013 and Graham Rahal at Belle Isle in 2017. While Newgarden has been so dominant at Iowa (5 career wins) and is undefeated on ovals this season (3-for-3), trends say he may not win on Sunday.
- Power – He’s 0-for-11 on the season and 0-for-16 here. He starts on the pole again. However, he’s 0-for-7 in his previous times when being on the pole here with finishes of 5th (2010), 17th (2013), 4th (2017), 6th (2018), 3rd and 2nd (Last Year) and now 5th (Saturday). He does have 7 top 6’s in his last 9 Iowa starts though too.
- O’Ward – 3 of his 4 career wins have come on the backend of a doubleheader. While he was 5th in practice, qualified 5th for Saturday’s race and finished 3rd, he starts 11th on Sunday. He said he had a deficit to the Penske’s on Saturday and if he’s going to win on Sunday, he’s going to have to pass all 3 since they start in front of him.
- Palou’s Lead – Josef Newgarden cut 28 points out of Alex Palou’s lead on Saturday as the gap between the two is now 98. How much lower does it go? Palou finished 8th while Newgarden won on Saturday. Newgarden rolls off seventh and Palou 12th.
- Penske’s Race to Lose? They led 248 of 250 laps on Saturday in going 1-2-5. They start 1-2-7 on Sunday. Penske has won 6 of the last 8 races here..
Top Stats
I’m looking at the lap leaders category. If Will Power leads 18 or more laps on Sunday, he’ll become the 7th driver to eclipse the 5,000 laps led mark. Mario Andretti (7,595) leads all drivers. Michael Andretti (6,692), AJ Foyt (6,621), Scott Dixon (6,532), Helio Castroneves (6,074) and Al Unser (5,802) are also above it.
On top of that, Josef Newgarden needs just 40 more laps led to pass Al Unser Jr. for 11th on the all-time lap leaders chart. Unser Jr. had led 3,713 laps in his career. Newgarden has led 3,673 thus far. Unser did so in 329 starts. Newgarden has only made 193 of them.
Also, if Newgarden can win, he’d tie Helio Castroneves for second most oval wins with Penske at 17. Only Rick Mears (22) has more.
