CJ earned his second straight win on the season with Kyle Larson being victorious in last Sunday’s Pennzoil 400 at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. It was Larson’s third top 10 finish in his last four races on the season, which quickly puts him up towards the top of the championship favorites as a result.
While it was also the second time in three races that CJ put a driver in victory lane, it was Greg’s team that finally had a coming out party. After a frustrating start to the season, Greg’s pool of drivers had a strong outing in Vegas.
Greg had two of the top three finishes in Brad Keselowski (2nd) and Kyle Busch (3rd) but he also put three of his seven drivers on his lineup in the top five with Ryan Blaney’s fifth place effort. Throw in Erik Jones’ surprise top 10 (10th) in his No. 43 Chevrolet and you get four drivers with solid outings last Sunday.
CJ had Martin Truex Jr. (6th) and Christopher Bell (7th) also in the top 10 last week with Eric placing Denny Hamlin (4th), William Byron (8th) and Joey Logano (9th) in the top 10 on his team.
Eric also had Chase Elliott (13th) and Aric Almirola (38th) on his team as they each brought out the only two cautions of the final stage. Factor in Bubba Wallace having an early race mechanical malfunction and you get some bad luck for his drivers.
That may turn around a bit this weekend though with Logano winning the spring race last year in Phoenix and Elliott this past Fall. Eric has both on his lineup. He also has Denny Hamlin who had eight top 10 results in his last 10 tries on the 1-mile Arizona oval including three of his last four in the top five. William Byron had a top 10 in both races a year ago too, so this team could be the one to watch on Sunday.
CJ does have Larson (4 straight top 4 results), Truex Jr. (5 top 10’s last 7), Kevin Harvick (9 career Phoenix wins) and Kurt Busch (8 top 10’s since 2013) on his lineup that could make some noise.
CJ leads Eric by 125 points and Greg by 460 entering Sunday’s fifth race of the season.
