Can Andretti Autosport get 3rd Indy 500 win in last 5 years

INDIANAPOLIS — Parity has been high at the Indianapolis Motor Speedwaylately. We’ve seen nine straight different drivers win the Indianapolis 500. Will we go 10-for-10? Andretti Autosport hopes that if so, then either Zach Veach, Marco Andretti, Colton Herta or James Hinchcliffe is the one drinking the milk. If not, then Ryan Hunter-Reay or Alexander Rossi are the other two options for a multiple winner.

Through all the practice and qualifying last weekend, they look legit. They to me are the favorites.

The organization has shined in the ‘500 itself though. Andretti Autosport has sent three of those nine drivers to victory lane. Furthermore, they’ve won three times since 2014 and eyeing a fourth Indy 500 triumph in the last seven years in Sunday’s 104th Running (1 p.m. ET/NBC/INDYCAR Radio Network).

There’s no shortage of storylines if they do so too.

James Hinchcliffe is a welcomed redemption story. From nearly dying here in 2015, he winning the pole a year later in 2016, to missing the show in 2018 and being a last row qualifier last year, he lost his ride and comes back to Andretti where he has the best shot of a win in years. He will start

Rossi would be a great story too. After winning the 100th Running in 2016, Rossi has supplanted himself as one of the most popular drivers in the series. He’s good here too. He came home a close runner-up last year. He then came from the back to finish fourth in 2018. He was seventh in 2017 too. That’s four top 10 finishes in as many tries. Following a disaster start to the season, an Indy win will make all well again.

Hunter-Reay would move the needle as a two-time ‘500 champion. He finished eight in this race last year and fifth in 2018 and has also led 26 or more laps in four of the last seven ‘500’s.

Veach would be a fun story but none of these would be bigger than Marco Andretti. An Andretti win would be huge for race fans.

Marco, has been close too. From his first start in 2006 through his 10th start in 2015, Andretti had seven top 10 finishes including five of which being in the top four. While he does have one top 10 finish over the last four years, he has just one finish worse than 13th since 2013.

Chevrolet had the preferred engine in last year’s race, but if Honda has something for them, then Andretti certainly has to be the favorites.
