New crew chief for Kenseth at Ganassi

Chip Ganassi Racing announced on Tuesday a new crew chief for Matt Kenseth. Phil Surgen will replace Chad Johnston as crew chief of the No. 42 Chevrolet.

Johnston, has served as the crew chief of that ride since 2016.

Kenseth was hired on this spring to replace Kyle Larson who was fired following a racial slur used on Easter Night.

Kenseth, has not raced full time since 2017, had never drove this package before, let alone ever drove a Chevy, plus had never worked with Johnston either.

That’s why this decision is kind of baffling.

Kenseth, finished 10th in his debut with the team at Darlington but has had one top-10 finish since.
