When taking the first glance at the opening odds for Wednesday night’s Blue-Emu Maximum Pain Relief 500 (7 p.m. ET, FS1, MRN) at the Martinsville (VA) Speedway, you may see that the most recent winner in the NASCAR Cup Series is 10/1. That seems like a rather large bargain. I mean you get a guy that’s won twice this season already and has a top 11 in literally all 10 races run. Plus, Harvick has a top 10 finish in each of his last five starts on the .526-mile Virginia paperclip.
But, I would still say proceed with caution.
Penske and Joe Gibbs Racing have been the class of the field lately in Martinsville. Stewart-Haas Racing is likely the next best team as all four cars finished in the top 10 last March. But, with Hendrick Motorsports’ rise in the speed department again and SHR not really producing top five runs in Martinsville, I’m a little leary.
SHR went 6-7-9-10 in last year’s spring race. Harvick, has never won at Martinsville before and only has two top five finishes on the track since 2012, both coming in his last five starts though. In fact, his last four finishes on the paperclip have been fifth, fifth, 10th, sixth and seventh respectively.
He’s just missing something in comparison to JGR and Penske and even Hendrick Motorsports in fact at Martinsville and while a top 10 result is a given on Wednesday, a win isn’t.
