We knew the news would likely come that Pocono Raceway would be eventually allowed to host a race on their 2.5-mile track soon. With them hosting the first doubleheader weekend in NASCAR, Steve O’Donnell said when the first phase of scheduling came out that Pocono would remain as the first track to host the historic weekend. Then, a couple of weeks ago, Pocono got the green light from Pennsylvania’s governor to host a NASCAR race in June, but only without fans in attendance.
If you follow the trail, you’d see that the original Pocono race weekend would likely lead off the third phase of scheduling for NASCAR. On Tuesday, NASCAR President Steve Phelps said that a new version of the next wave of races would be announced soon, some of the details are already in place if you’re paying attention.
“Following the guidance on sporting events in Pennsylvania issues by Governor Tom Wolf this week, the 2020 NASCAR events at Pocono Raceway will be held without fans in attendance,” the track said via a statement on Friday.
So while no race at Pocono will have fans in 2020, at least they have racing and the TV revenue. The Brickyard weekend a week later appears to be the first race back with fans as those should be the first couple of races back on the third phase.
