Texas is going to reopen their state to sporting fans again. Governor Greg Abbott announced that the Lone Star State could hold fans in a limited capacity beginning next month. The catch is, it would pertain right now to sports that are played outside and the capacity can’t exceed 25-percent. The respective sporting leagues would be required to apply to Texas health officials in order to get this off the ground.
So, what does this do to the NTT IndyCar Series race on June 6 in Fort Worth? The Genesys 300 (8 p.m. ET, NBC, INDYCAR Radio Network) at the Texas Motor Speedway will be the series’ first race of the 2020 season. Guidelines have already been put in place for this event to take place behind closed doors.
With the race taking place next weekend, I can’t see track officials being able to pull this off in terms of letting fans in for that short of a time period. If anyone can do it, it would be Eddie Gossage, but even so, this would be a tall task to accomplish. The seating capacity is estimated to be around 110k, so a quarter of that would allow around 35k spectators though the gates. While that’s certainly doable, I don’t know if they can get the personnel and safety guidelines switch and safely in place by then.
Nevertheless, the invite is open if Texas and IndyCar can pull this off.
