William Byron thought that he’d be starting Wednesday night’s Alsco 500 (8 p.m. ET/FS1/PRN) in the 21st position. See, the next race on the NASCAR Cup Series calendar will have an invert, just like last Wednesday’s Toyota 500 at the Darlington Raceway did.
The top 20 of the finishing order from the Coca-Cola 600 is inverted. That means the 20th place finisher will roll off from the pole. Byron, crossed the finish line Sunday in 21st. But, his teammate, Jimmie Johnson, saw his No. 48 Chevrolet fail post race inspection, so instead of finishing second, he’s credited with a last place result. That moves everyone up a position.
Byron, now gets the pole. He also started on the pole for the 2019 Coke 600 too. He will be joined on the front row by another HMS teammate in Alex Bowman.
Both cars were actually really fast on Sunday night as those finishing positions weren’t indicative on how much speed they actually had. Bowman, led the most laps in fact.
