NASCAR is back at it this weekend. After racing twice over a span of a couple of days at the Darlington Raceway, the drivers have a home game next at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. First up is Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600 (6 pm ET/FOX/PRN).
This is a race every driver wants to win. It’s one of NASCARs Crown Jewels. So, in order to win, well you better be up on the wheel on the restarts.
With this low horsepower/high downforce package, it’s tough to pass. Track position is key. Plus, even before this new package was brought forth in 2019, Charlotte for whatever reason has produced some dominating performance.
Five of the last seven oval events for the Cup Series at Charlotte saw the race winner lead 100 or more laps. In fact, three of those five were 200 or more.
With the 1.5 mile North Carolina race track having more real estate to race on in the corners and everyone being bunched up, that’s the time to make up the most ground and put yourself in a position to win.
“That race track with this 550 (horsepower) package is pretty intense on these restarts,” said last years second place finisher Joey Logano. These restarts are going to have three or four wide racing because there’s more room at Charlotte than there is at Darlington. There’s going to be more aggressive moves on restarts that you’ll see. I expect the outside lane to be the best one and something we’ll have to fight through.
“Yes this is 600 miles and a long one, but I guarantee you the restarts are going to be intense because once you get 15-20 laps into a run, it just gets harder and harder to pass. From the first 10-15 laps, it’s going to be game on.”
That’s why you get the performances that Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr have put on there recently and why we can see that again on Sunday.
