Bowyer Wins 1st Couple Of Toyota 500 Stages, Has Bad Luck In The End

Clint Bowyer has had fast race cars before. Unfortunately, something and I do mean anything, always derails his chances of victory in the end. On Wednesday night, in the rain shortened Toyota 500 at the Darlington Raceway, Bowyer got up into the wall in his No. 14 Ford on Lap 191. A few laps later, more trouble ensued because of that as he’d bring out the caution on Lap 195. His race winning chances had now evaporated.

The result would read a 22nd place effort. If you look at his past results on the “Lady in Black” you’d see that Bowyer had one top 10 finish in his last 14 Darlington starts. He’s never had a top five in 16 tries now either.

But, when you look at how much speed his car had over the last two races on the 1.366-mile South Carolina race track, you’d see his frustration.

On Sunday, Bowyer finished seventh in Stage 1 and fifth in Stage 2. He was in position for a top five in the 400 mile race. Instead, he caught debris on his car in the end which forced the handling to go away in the closing laps. He’d finish 17th as a result.

On Wednesday, Bowyer won the first two stages of the race and lead a race -high 71 of 208 laps. That contact with the wall took the best car of the race out. Five of his last six Darlington finishes have been 17th or worse now.

“Very proud of the car the guys brought for me on a short turn around,” Bowyer said. “Fast hot rod. Thing just took off behind two cars racing for lucky dog and smoked the wall and blew our night. The No. 14 Rush Truck Centers/Mobil Delvac 1 Ford was fast. We keep doing that our day will come.”
